Choosing Topic for your Blog which is right for you

One of the readers of the blog asked my advice on how to choose the right niche to work in. While it looks like and easy question to answer, in reality it is not. I have personally started several blogs, which I got eventually bored with, thus placing them in the passive mode. I have other blog, quite interesting and attractive, but appeared to be unmarketable and unprofitable (at least, for me). I have found a nice post by Daniel Scocco at DailyBlogTips, where he reviews the possible reasons of the blogging failure, based on the improperly chosen blogging niche. Presenting the post for your attention.

A lot of people want to make money blogging, and a most of these people will fail miserably. There are 1000 reasons why this happens (and happens so often), but I find that one of the most common reasons a blog fails is because of the subject it is about.

No, not because you picked a subject that is way over saturated. And no, not because you picked a subject that is hard to monetize. What I am talking about here is when you pick a subject that you, the writer, have no business writing about in the first place.

You see, the number of people with blogs about a subject they either have no real interest in, no real passion for, no real experience with, no real knowledge about, or any combination of the four, is, quite frankly, pretty freaking insane. And hilarious.
Seriously, do you have any idea how many blogs there are about “making money online” that are written by people who have never made a cent online? Or how many blogs there are about “blogging” that are written by people who don’t actually have anything close to a successful blog? It’s kinda like a fat guy writing about weight loss. They lack significant knowledge about it, and they certainly lack first hand experience with it, but they see other people blogging about it successfully and making decent money, so they decide to try it too.
I mean, if it works for these people, it will surely work for you, right?

The obvious problem (well, obvious to me at least) is that you don’t actually have any knowledge about or experience with the subject. And, no matter how talented of a writer you may think you are, this tends to come through to your readers. You’d be surprised at just how easy it is to tell when you are reading something written by someone who is truly knowledgeable about a subject, and when you are reading something written by someone who is mostly just rewriting stuff they’ve learned from someone who actually IS knowledgeable about the subject.

It’s a big difference, and it’s usually quite noticeable. The result? Your blog will probably fail. People seeking information want to get that information from someone who is truly qualified to give it. You aren’t, and they will most likely notice.

It’s also entirely possible to be knowledgeable about a subject, but still not really be interested in it or passionate about it. This will again come through to your readers, but the even bigger problem here is that one of the keys to having a successful blog is time. It is extremely rare (you might as well read that as “impossible”) to see a blog become a success overnight. As I’m sure has been mentioned on Daily Blog Tips before, it takes time. In some cases, lots of time. And, if what you are blogging about isn’t something you are truly passionate about and interested in, guess what? This will be the slowest passing time you’ve ever experienced in your life.

In most cases, you will completely lose interest long before that time is ever reached. The result? Your blog will probably fail. You can’t fake passion, at least not long term. You may be able to fool your visitors for a while, but you won’t be able to fool yourself.

In the end, it’s pretty simple. Blog about a subject that you are at least somewhat knowledgeable about, and a large amount passionate about. If you don’t, you are putting your blog in a position to fail from day 1.
So the question now is, how do you find this magical blog subject that fits the above description? Well, there’s a few ways, but here’s my personal favorite tip:
Go to your family and close friends and present them with this question: If they had a problem of some kind, something that they needed help with, something they couldn’t figure out, something they didn’t understand, something they had questions about… what would make them say “Hey, I need to call [insert your name here]!”

The responses they give should give you a really good idea of the kind of stuff you should be blogging about. And once you have that, you’re set. Only 999 other possible reasons for why your blog will fail. Look on the bright side though. At least you’re starting off in a position to succeed. Many people don’t even have that.

Blogger Help Video Tutorials on YouTube

If you are a Blogger user, as I am, you probably once a while visit Blogger’s Help Center to find some new tips and answers to your technical questions. Blogger specialists decided to go “with the flow” and help those users who prefer visual presentation to the written description. Google Blogger has setup a YouTube channel specifically to show users step by step how to use Blogger features. The channel lacks a big variety of the offered video tutorials. At the moment, there are just 9 clips available. Blogger experts claim that more videos will be added in the coming months so hopefully the inventory of tutorials will increase rapidly.

For your convenience, I am bringing to your attention several of the proposed clips:

Collecting all online traces at personal Web page

In one of my previous posts I have presented Sweetcron as automatic lifestreaming solution for bloggers http://blogging4good.blogspot.com/2009/02/automated-open-source-life-stream.html).

If you did not like the presented solution at the time, Frindo might cover your needs. Take a look!

FriendFeed is an excellent web service that collects your online activity to share with others in a social setting. It automatically picks up the stuff you share on over 40 web sites, like YouTube and Flickr.

But you may want to embed this information at your virtual home and have people that visit your website to get all of your Diggs, Tweets, YouTubes, Flickrs, etc. So Frindo is just a simple script that uses the FriendFeed API to put your life stream on your website in a highly customizable way.

An example of Frindo in action can be seen on the home page at http://screwtheman.com

Requirements

  • Web server running PHP4
  • Friend Feed account
  • Minor knowledge of CSS, HTML, and web servers
Directions
1. Download the zip file and unzip it. The result should be a folder named ’frindo’.
2. Upload this folder intact on to your web server to a place that it can be seen by a web browser.
3. Temporarily make this folder writable.
4. Further information on embedding frindo into your site is on the configuration page when you run it. Frindo will detect that that it has not been configured and will show the configuration and usage interface.
5. Fill out the form and hit submit.
6. If everything is fine change the permissions on the frindo folder and frindosettings.php back to read only. If you ever want to reconfigure it, just remove or rename the frindosettings.php in your folder and follow the configuration process again.
Note: For additional security, you may want to put those files in a differently named folder than ’frindo’. As long as they’re together, it doesn’t matter what the folder name is.

How to Put a Widget on a Specific Page of your Blogger Blog

Widgets are short and handy small computer programs that can add more functionality to any Blog platform. In Blogger, where standard set of features and embedded plugins is rather limited, adding extended capabilities with third-party widget might help to spice up your blog and increase its attractiveness. It can be added as an extra code behind the new Page Elements through the Page Elements subtab of the Template tab.

In brief, to add widget or page elements to your blog login at Blogger.com and click on Layout link on Dashboard. Then click the Add Page Element link in the sidebar.

After adding a Page Element to your blog it can be seen on all your blog pages by default, unless you wrap the widget in conditional tags. In this publication, we will present you the way on how to put selectively widgets on particular blog pages. You really can decide on which pages or a single pagethe widget should appear.

WIDGET ON POST PAGES ONLY

If you want to put the widget only on the post (item) pages then paste this line :

<b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == "item"’>

immediately after the main includable line of code in the widget :

<b:includable id=’main’ var=’top’>

For this login at Blogger.com and click on Layout link on Dashboard. Then click Edit Html subtab of Template tab. Put a check in the Expand Wdgets Template checkbox at the top of the Template code box and scroll down to the widget code. Lastly in the widget code add a </b:if> before the immediate next </b:includable>. This is how the whole widget code will look like after the change :

<b:widget id=’HTML1’ locked=’false’ title=’’ type=’HTML’>
<b:includable id=’main’>
<b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == "item"’>

WIDGET CODE

</b:if>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

This widget will only appear on the Post Pages.

WIDGET ON MAIN PAGE ONLY

If you want the widget to appear only on the Main Page of the blog use the code below :

<b:widget id=’HTML1’ locked=’false’ title=’’ type=’HTML’>
<b:includable id=’main’>
<b:if cond=’data:blog.url == data:blog.homepageUrl’>

WIDGET CODE

</b:if>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

This widget will appear only on the Main Page.

WIDGET ON SPECIFIC BLOG PAGE

There are some cases in which you may want the widget to appear only on a specific page of your blog. For example, there might be some pages on your blog with heavy traffic where you plan to put some special ads or particular content. Create the widget by pasting the HTML in the new widget. Then modify the code as shown below :

<b:widget id=’HTML1’ locked=’false’ title=’’ type=’HTML’>
<b:includable id=’main’>
<b:if cond=’data:blog.url == "BLOG_PAGE_URL"’>

WIDGET CODE

</b:if>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

Replace the CAPS : BLOG_PAGE_URL with the permalink of your post.

WIDGET ON SPECIFIC LABEL PAGE

You can specify a widget to appear only on specific label pages. This is useful when you want to represent your labels with icons. For example, you may have posts on books and when the label books are clicked in your blog the sidebar will show a book icon. For such widgets, you can use the following code:

<b:widget id=’HTML1’ locked=’false’ title=’’ type=’HTML’>
<b:includable id=’main’>
<b:if cond=’data:blog.url == "http://BLOG_NAME.blogspot.com/search/label/LABEL_NAME"’>

WIDGET CODE

</b:if>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

Replace BLOG_NAME and LABEL_NAME with actual.

Disadvantages:
This post has been made in Smart Blogger. I already see several disadvantages of using this free software for blogs publishing:

1. No possibility of the text alignment options.
2. Very basic text formatting: color and bold/itallic/under only.
3. No spell checking option.
4. No advanced features as horizontal lines or tables generation.
5. Small publishing field, not very convenient for big posts.

Advantages:
1. Nice and pleasant interface.
2. Easy to use.
3. Portable software exists, so you do not need to install the software on your PC

Developers WebSite: http://www.smartpctools.com/smart_blogger/index1.html

Assessment: The software is good for the light operations, small notes in your Journal, but is lacking functionality for serious blogging.
